What’s on Tap in Tenleytown (4/4-4/10)

If you have the post-Spring Break blues, Tenleytown has plenty of events to make you feel like you are still on vacation or at least having a fun staycation. Free wine tastings, dance and choral concerts, and even a run with some Tigers – just some of what should be on your calendar:

Tuesday, April 5

  • American University’s Books That Shaped America series features The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats this month. Alex Hodges, Curriculum Materials and Education Librarian, will discuss the children’s classic, which is the first full-color picture book with an African-American as the main character. The conversation begins at noon in room 115 of the Bender Library.
  • Join the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at 12:15 p.m. for a discussion about Making Peace with Our Eating Habits with Annie Mahon, founder of Circle Yoga and author of Things I Did When I Was Hangry: Navigating a Peaceful Relationship with Food. Mahon will talk about individuals’ relationships with food and eating through the lens of mindfulness and social conditioning, and will offer simple practices to help attendees learn to be with the parts of themselves that struggle with using food as emotional comfort and the parts that judge them for eating too much. Each week, through April 26, OLLI will offer a thought-provoking lecture on current affairs, world politics, history, arts, or science. The hour-long lectures take place at Temple Baptist Church, 3850 Nebraska Avenue, and are free and open to the public. A full schedule is available online.
  • At 2:00 p.m., Iona hosts Mind, Body, and Spirit, a discussion, reading, and book signing starring three incredibly talented women – poet Nancy Arbuthnot; current Artist in Residence Lila Oliver Asher (94 years young!) who wrote The Men I Met in Bed, and Carol Binta author of Civilized Blacks. Wednesday, April 6

  • Join author Sarah L. Kaufman at 7:00 p.m. for a discussion of her book The Art of Grace: On Moving Well Through Life. With warmth, humor, and an ever-perceptive eye, Kaufman sifts the graceful from the graceless, celebrating heart-catching moments of physical elegance in sports, movies, dance, fashion, and music; rare sightings of celebrity grace; the secrets of gracious hosts; and grace found unexpectedly, in the kitchen of a high-end restaurant and among strippers in a basement bar. Kaufman’s thought-provoking reflections on these physical and social acts of grace offer hope for even the clumsiest, most awkward among us. The discussion will take place at the Tenley-Friendship Library, 4450 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.

Thursday, April 7

  • Interested in manga, anime, and everything Japanese? Join the Tenley-Friendship Library on the first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. for Manga Madness. Read manga, watch anime, and have fun! Appropriate for ages 11 to 19 years.
  • Enjoy a complementary wine tasting in Le Chat Noir’s upstairs wine lounge from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Located at 4907 Wisconsin Avenue, the French restaurant hosts a wine tasting on the first Thursday of every month, featuring a selection of three whites, three reds, and an amuse bouche. And don’t forget to sample Le Chat Noir’s menu while you are there.
  • The American University Chamber Singers present The Terezín Project: Art When All Is Lost, featuring rarely heard works and traditional Jewish song arrangements by Gideon Klein and Viktor Ullmann. The concert will also include performances of chamber works by Pavel Haas, Hans Krása, and Ullmann by the AU string faculty. The program concludes with the stirring contemporary cantata Songs of Children – a setting of a Terezin poem by American composer Robert Convery for chorus, piano, and string trio. Performances will be given on Thursday at 8:00 p.m at the Katzen Arts Center, and Saturday and Sunday at the Kay Spiritual Life Center at 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively. Tickets, which can be purchased online, are $10 for adults and $5 for students and members of the AU community.

Friday, April 8

  • American University presents its Spring Dance Concert featuring fresh and seasoned perspectives on modern and jazz dance performed by AU dance students. The concert features new works by guest artists, AU faculty, and students. Performances will be given on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 p.m at the Greenberg Theatre, 4200 Wisconsin Avenue; a discussion with the choreographers will follow the Friday concert. Tickets, which can be purchased online, are $15 for adults and $10 for students, seniors, and members of the AU community.

Saturday, April 9

  • Start your weekend off by running with tigers – the Wilson Tigers, that is! The Second Annual Tenley Tiger Run, benefiting the high school’s six championship running teams, kicks off at 9:00 a.m. at Wilson High School. Simultaneous 5K and 2.5K races loop through the neighborhood along with a Fun Run for the younger set at the end. Go to www.TenleyTigerRun.com to register, donate, or sponsor the event.

Sunday, April 10

  • Join the American University Museum for a special family edition of their popular Kids@Katzen program. The April Kids@Katzen will take place from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., and include an engaging art project for the whole family based on the Look At It – Think About It exhibition of work by local artist William Dunlap. Kids@Katzen is appropriate for children ages 5 to 12 years. Registration is $15 per family of four, and $5 for each additional member; advanced registration online is strongly recommended.

And don’t forget these great weekly events:  

  • Join the Tenley-Friendship Library and some adorable pups each Tuesday for Happy Tails Story Time at 6:30 p.m. Story time begins with a book, some songs and then it is your turn. Bring your own book, make up a story, or grab a book in the library to read to a lovable doggie! Dogs are provided by volunteers with People Animals Love.
  • On Wednesdays, enjoy yoga in the galleries at the Katzen Arts Center at 10:00 a.m. Sessions will be led by a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher. Participants are asked to bring a mat. Free for museum members; $10 for non-members.
  • Stop by the AU Farmers Market every Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Agora Farms and Upper Crust Bakery offer fresh vegetables, homemade breads, and desserts. The market is located in front of the Mary Graydon Building on the university campus.
  •  Bring your little LEGO architects and builders to the Tenley-Friendship Library on Wednesdays to join the LEGO Construction Crew. Each Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., the library will provide all the bricks a child’s imagination can handle. Ages 6 to 12 years welcome.
  • On Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m., Tenley Bar & Grill hosts a weekly trivia competition run by Stump! Trivia Quiz. Gift cards, prizes, and other swag will be award to the top teams. Plus all trivia participants (21 years of age or older) can enjoy half price wine bottles – which may or may not help your trivia game.
  • Each Friday, the American University Museum offers docent-led tours at 11:30 a.m. Learn about the current exhibitions and discuss your favorite works of art. The tours are free and open to the public. Visit american.edu/museum for more information.
  • Every Friday, Paul’s Wine and Spirits hosts a free wine tasting, opening 10 to 15 wines from around the world to let customers sample new and exciting vintages. Wines are announced during the week via Paul’s Facebook page. Sip and learn from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Paul’s Friendship Heights location, 5205 Wisconsin Avenue.
  • Warm up those vocal chords, Tenleytown – karaoke is in town. Tenley Bar & Grill will let you be the star every Friday night starting at 9:00 p.m. Plenty of drink specials will be on offer for those needing a little liquid courage to take the mic. DC Sing King Ra.Free hosts this fun event strictly for those 21 years of age and older.
  • Start your weekend off with Family Story Time at the Tenley-Friendship Library. Enjoy songs, rhymes and good books on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. All ages welcome.
  • Coffee Nature, our neighborhood coffee shop, has a weekly live music show on Saturdays. Stop by between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and enjoy some entertainment with your weekend coffee, pastry, or lunch. Coffee Nature is located at 4224 Fessenden Street.
  • Adorable cats and kittens are available for adoption each Saturday at PetMAC DC from noon to 2:00 p.m. during Homeward Trails’ pet adoption events. Who knows, you might just meet the newest member of your family. PetMAC is located at 4914 Wisconsin Avenue, NW.
